Etruscan terracotta Bocchero kantharos. Burnished black ware with looped strap handles, insised bands to lip, notched ridge to body and flared foot.  C.600-550 B.C.E. This is a particularly large example.

Kantharos are banqueting cups associated with Dionysos; God of wine. Used both for drinking and ceremonial purposes. The distinctive shape probably derives from metalware vessels.

Provenance: private collection 1970's. Restored by G.Garbe, 23, Charlotte Street, London 1977

A similar example can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. NY. Accession number 21.88.146
